HALS
HALS’s unvarnished and moving performances are characterized by natural expressiveness and directness, challenging the polished perfection of mainstream a cappella. The four musicians know how to use their voices individually, then blend them back together into an organic whole. They are not afraid to take risks, occasionally plunging into freely improvised collective passages. While each singer leaves room for her individual voice and virtuosity, they never lose sight of the harmonic fusion of their voices or the sensitive interplay between them.
Artist
HALS (AUT)
HALS is an experimental a cappella vocal ensemble from Austria, featuring singers Anna Anderluh, Amina Bouroyen, Anna László, and Valerie Costa, all of whom have already made a name for themselves through other projects in Vienna’s jazz scene. They call their music “Free-Fall A Cappella,” creating harmonically complex vocal music with virtuosity and verve. Their repertoire includes unconventional arrangements of compositions from jazz, pop, and contemporary music—by artists such as Jacob Collier—as well as original material. In spring 2025, they released their debut album, Free Fall A Cappella, on Session Work Records.
