Lukas Lauermann

Lukas Lauermann’s music can be sparse and intimate, or expansive and epic—far more orchestral than one might expect from a single instrument. Elements of classical music, minimal music, experimental music, and pop merge into multilayered compositions. This music, full of serious beauty, speaks equally to emotion and intellect, defies conventional categories, and lingers long in the minds of listeners. With Varve, his fourth album, Lauermann turns his gaze toward hidden depths. Named after geological sediment layers that, like tree rings, preserve an archive of climate change, the album’s ten new pieces focus on subtle shifts that speak of something much larger: decay and renewal, the rationally explainable and the emotionally overwhelming. The cello moves through a finely woven texture of organ, vocal samples, and the hiss of tape machines—sometimes tentative, sometimes resolute, always searching for resonance in a world undergoing profound change.
