Flora Geißelbrecht (AUT)
When performing live, Flora Geißelbrecht has a toolbox packed with experimental playing and vocal techniques and creates an instrument out of herself and her viola that is both familiar and idiosyncratic in jazz, folk and new music. Still, this instrument remains purely acoustic, however electronic it may sometimes seem and be sonically inspired. Olivia Giovetti wrote in VAN magazine that her performance at times seemed “… like a lost Wim Wenders film.” She continued: “The invisible, unnameable elements of heaven overlap with the earthiness of her singing and the sound of her viola. The two spheres exist at times in their own dialogue.”

Artist
Flora Geißelbrecht (AUT)
Flora Geißelbrecht is a composer, performer, improviser and lyricist who focuses on contemporary music and musical and interdisciplinary interactions. Her music often engages with text, language or voice. As a violist, she has performed extensively both as a soloist and in ensembles (e.g., Ensemble Modern, Studio Dan) at Wien Modern, the Unsafe and Sounds Festival, Impuls Festival and the Vienna Festival (Wiener Festwochen). Flora Geißelbrecht's solo programmes for viola and voice have one thing in common: A great sensitivity for sound research and sound blending down to the finest detail, where she manages to fuse her voice and viola into a fascinating and seamless unity.
