Zençir & Georg Vogel Quartett

Georg Vogel, known for his innovative musical experiments and the claviton he developed himself, the virtuoso oud player and renowned instrument maker Karim Othman-Hassan, percussionist Valentin Duit and Pamelia Stickney on the mesmerising theremin, together perform some of Cantemir's works, particularly his own compositions, and create a completely new soundscape. The ensemble remains true to the Ottoman scholar's detailed musical journey and extends it with a contemporary sound language. Zençir will be presenting their recent album release of the same name at Jazz&TheCity.

Zençir

The Zençir ensemble combines historical and contemporary soundscapes, drawing inspiration from the music collection of the Moldavian prince, polymath and tanbur virtuoso Dimitrie Cantemir (Kantemiroglu). Cantemir collected over 350 Ottoman instrumental compositions between 1690 and 1700 during his stay in Constantinople, which he recorded in a notation he developed specifically for that purpose.
