James Brandon Lewis Quartett (USA)

If anyone has literally absorbed jazz in almost all its facets, it’s James Brandon Lewis. Charlie Haden, Geri Allen, Wadada Leo Smith, William Parker, Joshua Redman, Karl Berger and Jamie Branch; this saxophonist, who has won the German Jazz Prize (Deutscher Jazzpreis), among others, has worked with them all. The British Guardian newspaper described the New York tenor saxophonist as “one of the fiercest sounds in modern jazz.” Indeed, Lewis balances “a deep, gospel-informed spirituality with free-jazz abandon and hard-hitting funk-meets-hip-hop underpinning", as the Rolling Stone Magazine puts it, "with a penchant for unbound exploration" (Pitchfork). He cites Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry and Amiri Baraka as influences.
